Deater Family Information

Highlights:
Getting Tested
Many members of the Deater Family have participated over the years in studies of the familial disease. Genetic testing done at the Cecil B. Day Neuromuscular Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital, in the 1980s and 1990s, contributed to the identification of the gene that causes Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy Type 1 (HSN I). During the course of the Day Lab study, some family members were informed of their results through their doctors or a genetic counselor.
The Day Lab is no longer able to provide research test results, as the test is now available through a licensed laboratory. The MGH Neurogenetics DNA Laboratory is a clinical service laboratory offering molecular DNA diagnostic testing for neurogenetic disorders. Test protocols have been developed directly from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) research laboratories. The Neurogenetics DNA Laboratory maintains a close working affiliation with the research laboratories.
If you are considering genetic testing, there are a few things
you should know. Please read the following documentation.
